2005 Dog Sculpture by Jeff Dubin:
"For the Art Festival to commission me to create a 'dog' was at first an alien idea and although I knew that the board wanted a 'dog' I went ahead, hoping to convince the decision makers to accept a complete abstraction. I thought of it as a challenge, and I created 'DOG', a form that conformed to the current movement in my work. As a sculptor I feel capable of creating anything, from a classical portrait to my current work. And what I choose to create is personal and sacred. There is the choice not to create things to satisfy others...and I have never done so... until now. It is the dilemma of retaining integrity in my work even if it doesn't sell at all.
I tried to work out a compromise and do a recognizable dog that was acceptable to the festival and still feel as though my integrity was intact. I discussed it with my family. I researched breeds and stumbled on the sight hounds, the greyhounds, and decided to stylize its wonderful musculature."
Jeff's partner's name is Jill Goodpasture (life partner and studio too). Jill is the master mold maker, the one who crafted the production mold used to produce the 100 copies of the original. A bronze limited edition of the sculpture, funded by Jeff personally, is available for purchase at the Lauryn Taylor Gallery on San Carlos between Ocean and 7th. The Carmel Art Festival will receive $1000 for each bronze sold.
